FAYETTE COUNTY — Two Marion County men are in the Fayette County Jail in connection with the weekend theft and burning of a pickup truck taken from a Vandalia home.

Trenten L. Smith, of Patoka, and Mason J.C. Dollins, of Vernon, both 21-years-old, were formally charged in Fayette County Court Thursday in connection with the stolen truck that was found crashed and burned early Saturday morning on the northwest side of Patoka.

Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith says there were a total of four individuals involved — three adults and one juvenile. The other adult and the juvenile have not been identified. Smith says the case was solved due to the community’s help and great work by the Fayette County deputies.

Smith is charged with three Class 2 felonies for theft between $10,000 and $100,000; receiving, selling, or possessing a stolen vehicle; and criminal damage to government property between $10,000 and $100,000, as well as misdemeanor criminal trespass to vehicles.

Dollins is charged with Class 1 felony unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle; Class 2 theft between $10,000 and $100,000; Class 3 criminal damage to property between $10,000 and $100,000; and misdemeanor criminal trespass to vehicles.

They both remain in the Fayette County Jail, with bail set at $25,000 each, preliminary hearings scheduled for July 14. If they are released on bond, they’re directed to abstain from drugs and alcohol with random testing.

The truck, owned by Tyler Meseke of Vandalia, was apparently driven through Patoka at a high rate of speed before becoming stuck across a ditch on Bond Street in Patoka where it curves to join Boat Dock Road just north of the Patoka Park.

It was there that gasoline was apparently poured from the road, to the truck and then set on fire.
