FRANKLIN COUNTY — A semi driven by a 44-year-old Washington County man was involved in a fiery accident early this morning on Interstate 57 in Franklin County, resulting in motorists being detoured for several hours.

Franklin County Emergency Management says Shane M. Blumhorst, of Nashville, was southbound on I-57 at the Petroff Road overpass in Benton when he said his semi began drifting towards the right side of the roadway and he was unable to regain control of the vehicle.

Blumhorst went on to say his trailer struck the bridge support on the overpass. His semi went off the roadway on the right side and entered a ditch.

The semi remained upright, but debris from it caught on fire caused by the trailer hitting the bridge.

After the crash, some oil and other materials the semi was hauling caught fire.

Firefighters and emergency responders arrived shortly thereafter.

After the fire was put out, officials started containing what remained of the materials.

Southbound lanes of I-57 at Petroff Road were closed and drivers were told to take other routes as several gallons of oil spilled onto the roadway.

One lane of southbound I-57 reopened around 8 to let some traffic through, but ISP has not given a time estimate for when the other lane will be reopened.

No word at this time as to what caused the accident or if any injuries were reported.
