FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — A federal civil rights lawsuit connected to the investigation of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz’s death has been settled.

Vernon Randolph III sued the Gliniewicz estate, the village of Fox Lake, its mayor and a former police chief. Randolph, who is black, alleged he was targeted as a potential suspect because of his race.

Police initially investigated the officer’s September 2015 death as a homicide but determined later Gliniewicz killed himself because his theft from a youth program was close to being discovered.

Randolph attorney Kevin O’Connor tells the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald that “the case is settled.” He said he was barred from revealing details.

Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit confirmed “the case is over,” but also would not divulge information on the settlement.
