Charles “Chuck” Shumard was initially brought in to the Clinton County Jail Monday on an investigative hold.

But after a few hours he was arrested for alleged aggravated criminal sexual abuse and alleged sexual relations within families.

After reviewing the information in the case, prosecutors formally charged Shumard Wednesday with two Class 2 felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a family member under the age of 18.

Judge Stan Brandemeyer advised Shumard of the charges against him and the possible penalties.

Bail was set at $25,000 with special conditions of release to have no contact with the alleged victim.

He was appointed a public defender and is next scheduled in court July 13 for a first appearance with counsel.

An emergency order of protection was granted Tuesday in Clinton County Court against Shumard, who remains in the Clinton County Jail.
