SWAT standoff in Fayette County lands two in jail

FAYETTE COUNTY — A Saturday morning standoff with police in Fayette County resulted in two people being arrested on multiple meth-related and other charges.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old Shane T. Hans, and 33-year-old Kayleigh Jo Hughes, were arrested after a raid was conducted Saturday morning on a Hagarstown home.

Deputies were aware that a wanted individual was living in the home, and with the assistance of the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System [ILEAS] SWAT Team went to the home around 6 a.m. Saturday to arrest the individual.

Once on scene officers were involved in a standoff with individuals in the home for approximately one hour, before deploying tear gas to bring the standoff to an end.

Both Hans and Hughes were taken into custody. Pending charges against Hans include possession of methamphetamine; unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon; possession of a vicious, un-neutered dog by a felon; possession of drug paraphernalia; resisting a peace officer; and on outstanding Fayette and Effingham county warrants.

Hughes was arrested for alleged possession of meth, resisting a peace officer and concealing, or aiding a fugitive.

Hagarstown is about 5 miles southwest of Vandalia.
