SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner is working with Illinois state police on how to handle a proposal to make marijuana possession in small amounts punishable only with fines under a bill he appears poised to sign.

The Republican vetoed a bill last year that sought to do the same thing, but suggested he would sign it with stronger provisions. Lawmakers complied with his recommendations in this year’s bill.

They include higher fines up to $200 and a lower possession threshold for what should be treated as a civil offense. Under the bill, possession of up to 10 grams of marijuana would not carry jail time.

Rauner’s spokeswoman says he’s still reviewing the bill. But Democratic Sen. Heather Steans, a sponsor, says the administration has assured her Rauner will sign it next month.
