CHICAGO (AP) — Cook County sheriff’s officials say deputies are attempting to resolve a disturbance at the county’s jail, where two inmates are holding another detainee hostage.

A sheriff’s spokesman says two detainees Thursday evening took control of a housing tier in the maximum security division of Cook County Jail. The spokesman says the inmates covered the floor and obscured cameras within the tier with soapy water. They later destroyed the cameras.

Officials say there are 16 detainees in the tier, with one apparently being held hostage with a sharp object. No injuries have been reported.

Authorities say an emergency response team is at the scene attempting to resolve the situation peacefully.
