EDDYVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The former treasurer of Eddyville is charged with stealing tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars from the small southern Illinois town.

The Southern Illinoisan reports that 58-year-old Kim Smith faces five felony counts related to allegations of theft, but she says she can’t remember what happened.

She has been accused of stealing the money by forging the signature of the village mayor and cashing government checks made out to herself.

A Pope County judge has granted a request from Smith’s attorneys for a psychological exam. They argue she is suffering from retrograde amnesia, a medical condition causing a loss of memory of all information and events that took place before the condition developed.

Court documents say Dr. William Donaldson, a clinical psychologist in Marion, is expected to perform the exam.
