LELAND GROVE, Ill. (AP) — Police in the central Illinois community of Leland Grove were stopping motorists this week to reward them for good driving.

The community on Springfield’s southwest side was the site of a detail this week for recognizing drivers who use safety belts and come to complete stops.

Police Chief Dan Ryan told The (Springfield) State Journal-Register that he stood at an intersection and notified two officers of compliant drivers. The officers approached and offered coupons to a pizza restaurant.

Nathan Gutmann of Springfield says “it’s super cool that they are doing this.”

The department did a more traditional detail days earlier — handing out 48 citations for unbelted motorists or those who were texting at the wheel.

Ryan says “texting and driving is almost epidemic.”
