SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner has signed four bills on hunting and fishing during Conservation Day at the Illinois State Fair.

A news release from the governor’s office emphasizes, in particular, a bill that extends the youth license program from just hunting and fishing to trapping.

The idea is to encourage younger hunters to develop as lifelong sportsmen who will contribute to conservation efforts through their purchases of licenses, stamps and other fees.

Rauner said Saturday that “investing in young hunters and fishers helps implant a great love for the outdoors that will continue through a lifetime.”

Two of the other laws add catfish to the list of aquatic animals that can be taken by bowfishing and permit hunters to take bobwhite quail, chukar partridge and gray partridge on public hunting grounds.
