MOUNT VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Police Department is investigating a Monday morning shooting incident that sent a man to the hospital with a gunshot wound, and another man in jail on drug-related charges.

According to reports, just after 1 a.m. Monday, a Mt. Vernon police officer was responding to a report of suspicious persons in the 100 block of North 29th street when he heard a gunshot in the area.

Officers then encountered a gunshot victim near the 2700 block of North Street, and a discarded handgun was then found in that area.

The gunshot victim was transported to Crossroads Community Hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

While investigating the shooting incident, officers arrested 20-year-old Dantrez Brown, of Mt. Vernon for alleged possession of a controlled substance near a school and manufacture with the intent to deliver less than 2.5 grams of cannabis.

However; no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, but the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
