Neil Allen Burge

burge-obitNeil Allen Burge, 90 years old, of Centralia passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Centralia. He was born on July 10, 1926 in Raccoon Township, IL. the son of Leander “Tommy” & Opal Annie (Hawkins) Burge. He married Hazel (Gualtney) Burge in 1951 in Centralia, IL. and she preceded him in death in 1988.

Survivors include daughters, Tonia Davis and husband Jeff of Centralia, Lisa Brothers of Centralia; grandchildren, Cameron Davis and wife Lydia of St. Louis, MO, Kendall Davis and fiancee Lauren Hall of Brighton, IL, Jason Brothers of St. Louis, MO, Amy Turner and husband Tim of Swansea, IL, Jennifer Hancock and husband Brian of Iuka, IL; great-grandchildren, Haley, Lauren Brothers, Gabe, Rowan Turner, Kaden, Kenadie, Keylie Hancock; sister, Norma Jean Crouch and husband Rev. Louis Crouch of Gosport, IN; special friends, Anna Fae Sisson, Mike and Darlene Richards, Brian, Darla, Madison and Riley Miller, Holly, Andy, and Grant Davis; several nieces and nephews.

Neil was preceded in death by his parents and wife, sister, June Burke, brothers, Wright and Reese Burge, infant daughter Carla Jean Burge, son-in-law, Mike Brothers, brother-in-law, Herbert Burke.

Mr. Burge attended Fairview Grade School. He graduated from Salem High School in 1944. In his early years, he worked at Valley Steel, delivered milk for Roth Dairy, and enjoyed involvement on the farm that had been with the family for over 100 years. The farm is still being cared for by family. He worked for the State of Illinois at the animal disease lab as a Histologist and later retired. He was member of the Centralia Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed working on puzzles and reading. He loved watching Western movies. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He enjoyed watching area local sports. He was on the Raccoon Grade School Board for 9 years. He loved going to local auctions. He treasured his time spent being a grandfather, great-grandfather, and attending family functions.

He served in the United States Army as Military Police Officer and ranking as Corporal, during the Korean War and Battle of Okinawa from 1944 to 1946.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Irvin Macz Funeral Home in Centralia with Rev. Sumner Morrison and Pastor Jeremy Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Burge Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Family to be used for cemetery upkeep.
