Woodlawn resident wins $500,000 lottery prize, ticket purchased in Mt. Vernon

knox-lotteryWOODLAWN, IL— “I can’t believe I’m a half-millionaire!” Woodlawn resident Melba Knox said after scratching an Illinois Lottery Towering 10’s ticket and instantly winning a top prize of $500,000.

Knox was in her car when she used a quarter to scratch her Towering 10’s ticket.  When she saw the $500,000 prize amount, she was sure she had made a mistake so she put on her glasses to take a closer look.  Still not believing her good fortune, she drove to her brother’s house where he double-checked the ticket and confirmed her win.  When he advised her to immediately sign the back of her ticket, Knox had a hard time.  “I was crying and shaking and could barely write my name!”

A factory worker all of her adult life, Knox, 64, was hoping to retire within the next year.  “Without this win, I wouldn’t be able to retire when I wanted to.  This couldn’t have happened at a better time!”  After presenting her winning ticket at the Lottery Prize Center in Springfield, she drove to work and notified them of her retirement.

When asked about her plans for the windfall, Knox said she and her husband would pay bills, invest and share with their son, daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. “I know money doesn’t buy happiness, but this $500,000 sure is making us smile!”

Knox said she buys one instant Lottery ticket every week on payday.  She bought her winning Towering 10’s ticket at Circle K, 103 North 44th Street in Mount Vernon.  The retailer received a bonus of $5,000, equal to one percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.  Towering 10’s is a $10 instant ticket with three top prizes of $500,000.  Two of the $500,000 prizes have not yet been claimed.   For more information, please visit illinoislottery.com.
