(MT. VERNON, IL) — Mt. Vernon City Council met Monday evening. They opened with a public hearing to inform the public of the proposed application to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and to the Illinois Housing Development Authority for Housing Rehabilitation Grants to provide safe and sanitary housing for low to moderate income persons within Mt. Vernon. Among items on the regular agenda, the council accepted a bid from Roley Excavating for $24,113.50 bids for the 12th Street sidewalk and curb project and a motion was made for permission to seek bids for asbestos and mold abatement at City Hall. The Council provided a first reading and heard from citizens regarding an ordinance establishing water and sewer rates and implementing a capital improvement fee dedicated to public utilities capital improvements. Also, an ordinance authorizing transfer of surplus property to Central Christian Church was approved. Finally, the mayor read a proclamation celebrating the 40th anniversary of Cedarhurst Craft Fair and a presentation of Republic Rewards Grant.
