Trial delayed for Centralia woman charged with 2014 fatal DUI crash

JEFFERSON COUNTY — The jury trial of a 29-year-old Centralia woman charged in connection with the November 2014 traffic death of a Centralia man has again been delayed.

Brittany Schwanke was scheduled to be tried next week in Jefferson County Court on charges of felony aggravated driving while under the influence of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs in connection to a fatal vehicle crash north of Dix that claimed the life of 22-year-old Bret “BJ” Henkel.

However, the trial was continued at a hearing today and is now scheduled to be held November 15, as the defense awaits additional information from its experts.

The defense had previously sought experts on toxicology and accident reconstruction.

Prosecutors allege Schwanke was under the influence of illegal controlled substances at the time of the fatal crash on Illinois Route 37.
