SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — It’s not too early to book a campsite to view next summer’s total solar eclipse in southern Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday that reservations can be made at select campgrounds for Aug. 14-27. A total solar eclipse will be visible in southern Illinois on Aug. 21 next year.

More than 1,600 Illinois eclipse-zone campsites are available to be reserved at www.ReserveAmerica.com. Some sites also allow group campgrounds and picnic shelters to be booked. Additional campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Among the state parks in the eclipse zone taking camping reservations are Randolph County State Recreation Area, Giant City State Park and Lake Murphysboro State Park.
