CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A group of Illinois judges, lawmakers and court officials are joining a national movement to stop the practice of holding people arrested for non-violent crimes in jail while they await trial.

Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita Garman is among the group that also includes the chief judge of Winnebago County and State Representative Carol Ammons of Urbana.

The goal of the movement being kicked off today is to help judges make more objective decisions about setting bail, a move advocates say will save millions of dollars now spent to jail non-violent detainees.
