William Dean “Bill” Holstlaw

COLUMBIA, Mo. — William Dean “Bill” Holstlaw, 85, of Columbia, Mo., passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at Boone Hospital.

He was born on September 17, 1931, in Sandoval, the son of Robert James and Flossie Opal (Pigg) Holstlaw, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married May 7, 1955, in Centralia, to Lorene Potter, who preceded him in death on October 7, 1983. He was married on May 27, 1989, in Laurie, Mo., to Shirley A. Steffen, who survives at the home.

Bill served in the United States Marine Corps in the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. He was a furniture salesman for over 30 years. He later worked for Gates Rubber Company. He attended Woodcrest Chapel in Columbia. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and loved spending time with friends and family. He was very particular with his yard and enjoyed working outside. Bill never missed a morning meeting with friends at McDonald’s for coffee. As recently as two years ago, he was an accomplished snow skier.

Along with his wife of over 27 years, he is survived by: his children, Randy Holstlaw and wife Sharon of Evergreen, Colorado, Janie Samuels and husband Mike of Cary, Ill., Julie Haynes and husband Darrell of Kirkwood, Mo.; stepdaughters, Debbie Strid and husband Marc of Columbia, Mo., Theresa Steffen and friend Damone Tasco of Quincy, Ill., Sherry Canine and husband Mark of Millersburg, Mo., Barbara Kay Hett of Moberly, Mo. and Stephanie Schinnerer and husband Jeff of Glenrose, Texas; 10 grandchildren; one great grandson; and one brother, Tom Holstlaw of Sandoval.

Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dwaine and Leroy Holstlaw; and one sister, Ethel Bowers.

A graveside service and inurnment with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2016 in Peaceful Valley Cemetery in Odin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Central Missouri Honor Flight at centralmissourihonorflight.com. Day Macz Funeral Homes in Sandoval is in charge of local arrangements.
