ST. CLAIR COUNTY — Health officials believe a chili cook-off held in Belleville last month has resulted in multiple cases of salmonella poisoning.

The St. Clair County Health Department and the Illinois Department of Public Health announced that fewer than a dozen cases of salmonella have been confirmed from the chili cook-off held by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce on October 7 and 8 in the public square in Belleville.

Officials warn that sickness can be transmitted from person-to-person, and anyone working in child care, elderly care, with immunocompromised people or those who work in food service, should be restricted from work until they are healthy.

Anyone who may have become ill after participating in the event is urged to contact the St. Clair County Health Department at 618-233-6175.
