CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say an Illinois State Police trooper who was injured during an altercation with an armed motorist at a suburban Chicago expressway toll plaza has been released from the hospital.

According to state police, the trooper, who was not identified, was injured in the neck during the Monday incident. He was taken to a hospital and police say Tuesday morning he’s doing well.

Authorities say the incident began when the trooper observed an alleged “suspicious person” at the toll plaza on Interstate 294 in South Holland. When he confronted the man, a struggle occurred, resulting in the man’s gun discharging several times. Neither man was struck by bullets.

Police say the suspect fled on foot and was still at large Tuesday morning. A person of interest was questioned and cleared.
