SESSER, Ill. (AP) — Election night frayed many nerves, including those of the mayor of the southern Illinois community of Sesser, who offered his resignation after people he said will not help his community were elected.

WSIL-TV in Carbondale reports Mayor Jason Ashmore noted in a Facebook post Wednesday that Sesser residents and those in nearby towns voted for candidates who won’t help the city or southern Illinois.

He wrote he would resign because he can’t work hard for people who don’t care to help him work for them. Before the post was taken down, there were reactions. Georjanna Bennett said she feared for Sesser’s future if Ashmore steps down.

Another, Tim Hicks, called Ashmore’s words “not professional.” Late Wednesday, Ashmore posted an apology on Facebook, saying he allowed exhaustion and his emotions to get the better of him.
