MARION COUNTY — Bail has been set at $250,000 for a 53-year-old Central City man being held in the Marion County Jail on charges of sexually assaulting a young boy.

Brett Herbert was arrested Friday on an arrest warrant charging him with two counts criminal sexual assault of a family member under the age of 18.

According to Central City police, the warrant was issued Thursday and stemmed from an investigation that was launched February 18 when the alleged victim’s mother filed a report with police and the child was interviewed by the Amy Center.

Herbert appeared in Marion County Court Monday where he was formally charged with the two Class 1 felony charges. He was advised that he is prohibited from having contact with the child or the child’s mother whether he is freed on bond or not.

Herbert requested a public defender but was found to have significant assets. A hearing was subsequently scheduled for March 15 to determine if Herbert has counsel.
