MARION COUNTY — A 15-year-old juvenile male was taken to the Salem Township Hospital Tuesday night after he was injured when the allegedly stolen truck he was driving crashed and rolled in rural Iuka.

The blue Dodge pickup truck was reportedly stolen around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning from the parking lot at Mt. Vernon Township High School.

Mt. Vernon police received a report a short time later of the truck being stolen and they reportedly spotted the truck a few hours later but due to safety concerns officers terminated the pursuit.

The truck was then spotted on Route 15 heading out of Mt. Vernon toward Bluford where the owner, who was riding with a friend, spotted the truck and followed it into Marion County and ultimately into rural Iuka.

The vehicle’s owner contacted the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and kept them updated on the location and direction of his stolen truck but around 6:15 p.m. lost track of the truck in rural Iuka.

Marion County Sheriff’s deputies located the truck soon after at Bottom Road and Skillet Fork Road where they report it had been in a rollover crash and suffered heavy damage. It was towed from the scene.

The juvenile reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Salem Township Hospital after being taken into custody.

Correction: A reference to the juvenile in this story being a runaway from Spero in Mt. Vernon has been removed, as the agency is reporting he was not one of their residents.
