JEFFERSON COUNTY — Illinois State Police are investigating a one-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 57 in Jefferson County that sent two people to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries.

According to reports, around 6:20 p.m. 70-year-old Frank Yonce, of Eureka, Missouri was traveling northbound in a 2015 Mazda MX-5 on I-57 near milepost 83 when he experienced a sudden and severe medical issue.

The vehicle left the roadway to the west, drove through the median, and entered the shoulder of I-57 southbound before traveling back to the east and into the median. The vehicle struck several bridge support crash barrels, overturned and came to rest upside down.

Both Yonce and his 67-year-old passenger, Linda Yonce, also of Eureka, were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Frank Yonce was later airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for additional treatment.
