MOUNT VERNON — A 23-year-old Centralia man is in the Jefferson County Jail on multiple charges including armed vehicular hijacking.

According to the Mt. Vernon police, around 11:25 p.m. Saturday, Shonn Bacon was arrested after officers received a report of an armed male subject fighting with females inside the Applebee’s Restaurant on Potomac Boulevard.

While officers were en-route the male subject reportedly exited the business, and entered an occupied vehicle on the parking lot of the neighboring Arby’s restaurant.

Officers intercepted the vehicle as it was leaving towards Broadway. Upon initiating a traffic stop on the vehicle, Bacon, the driver, exited the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Bacon was reportedly observed holding a handgun as he fled.

Officers initiated a foot pursuit of Bacon as he ran back north. Officers were eventually able to contain Bacon on the parking lot of the Mt. Vernon Hotel and Event Center on Potomac.

Bacon was still reportedly armed with the handgun and initially refused to drop it. After some time, Bacon did drop the handgun, but resisted arrest.

He was ultimately taken into custody and it was determined he was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections stemming from a 2015 conviction of being a felon in possession of a firearm in Sangamon County. The Illinois Department of Corrections was contacted, and a parole revocation warrant was issued.

Bacon has been charged with aggravated battery in a public place, domestic battery, possession of a firearm by a felon, aggravated assault, armed habitual offender, aggravated vehicular hijacking, resisting arrest and the Department of Corrections warrant.

Bacon is being held in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting the formal filing of charges and the setting of bail.
