WASHINGTON COUNTY — A 35-year-old Coulterville man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Illinois Route 15 near Ashley in Washington County.

According to Illinois State Police, Matthew R. McKinley was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened around 6:14 a.m.

McKinley was reportedly driving a 2005 Cadillac STS westbound on Illinois Route 15 while a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 driven by 40-year-old Michael R. Barfield Jr., of Nashville was traveling eastbound, both near the intersection with Liberty Church Road.

For an unknown reason the Cadillac entered the eastbound lane and struck the Chevy Silverado head-on.

McKinley was ejected from the Cadillac and was pronounced dead at the scene. Barfield was extricated from the Silverado and airlifted directly from the scene to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
