ST. LOUIS (AP) — The U.S. Marshals Service says marshals fatally shot a man who tried to attack them with a knife.

The shooting happened Friday in Alton, Illinois, near St. Louis. The 42-year-old man killed has not been identified.

Marshals Service supervisory deputy Patrick James says marshals from Missouri went to an Alton home searching for a Missouri man indicted on federal methamphetamine charges. The man was wanted for violating terms of his bond, and a federal judge issued an arrest warrant on Jan. 18.

James says two marshals inside the home found the man in a closet. James says the marshals fatally shot the man when he tried to use a knife on them.

The Illinois State Police is conducting an independent investigation.
