Altamont H.S. Athletic Director struck, killed by Amtrak train in Effingham

EFFINGHAM — The 53-year-old Athletic Director of Altamont High School was killed early Sunday morning when he was struck by a train while he was walking across the tracks in Effingham.

According to Effingham authorities, around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, Todd Arnold, of Effingham, was walking across the Canadian National Railroad crossing at Jefferson Avenue in Effingham, when he was struck by a southbound Amtrak train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary information shows the lights and gates at the crossing were operating properly.

Arnold was the assistant principal and athletic director at Altamont High School. He had organized the 83rd annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament, which ended just hours before his death.
