He was born March 11, 1924, in Odin, son of John Norman Gregory and Wava L. (Hays) Gregory. He married Evelyn Lorene “Tiny” Wilson on August 24, 1944, in Centralia and she survives in Sandoval.
In addition to his wife, Lorene “Tiny” of 73 years, he is also survived by a son: Ken Gregory and wife Nancy of Sandoval; two daughters: Mary Seats and husband Tim of Texico and Sandy Cox and husband Bill of Patoka; seven grandchildren: Chad Gregory and wife Kim, Kerry Gregory, Kelly Gregory and wife Tricia, Deena Harden, Jaime Seats, Amy Seats and Katie Cox; three great-grandchildren: Lindsay Mansker and Fiancée Tyler Foster, Jordan Gregory and wife Allison, and Nick Gregory; five great-great-grandchildren: Madison, Gabe, Kendel, Kylie, and Kenslie; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Steve Gregory, three sisters: Elsie Garrish, Irma Richey, and Donna Parson; and a niece: Wanda Taylor
Whitie served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After serving in the Military he went to Barber School in the late 1940’s to begin his career. He owned and operated Whitie’s Barber Shop in Sandoval for 50 plus years. He was a member of the Sandoval Masonic Lodge 932, Ainad Temple of Southern Illinois, Life Member of the Centralia V.F.W. Post 2055, DAV Illinois 76, and Central City Lions Club. He was also a Life Member of the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and in February of 2017 he received a pin, hat, and plaque for being the longest active member of 70 years. He was baptized and a member of the First Christian Church of Disciples in Sandoval for many years. Whitie enjoyed camping and fishing. He would take his wife “Tiny” dancing on Saturday nights at the V.F.W. for many years. Whitie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and his family meant the world to him.
Funeral Services for John L. “Whitie” Gregory will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018, at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Rev. Kenny Hayden officiating.
Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by the American Legion Post 446 and VFW Post 2055.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at the funeral home and also from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Thursday the funeral home.
Masonic Rites will be accorded at the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Memorial Donations may be made to Sandoval Fire Department and will be accepted at the funeral home.
