CLAY COUNTY — A 33-year-old Ingraham man has been arrested in Clay County in connection with an incident Tuesday night that sent another man to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Brandon L. O’Dell was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm, domestic battery, and aggravated battery.

Around 10:51 p.m. Tuesday, the sheriff’s office received a report that a man had been shot in Wendelin. Upon their arrival, deputies located a 29-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. O’Dell was still at the scene and was taken into custody without incident.

According to the investigation, O’Dell had a loaded handgun and the victim — a friend — was attempting to disarm him, due to a fear that O’Dell would harm himself or someone else.

During the struggle for the handgun it was discharged causing the bullet to strike the victim in the leg. The victim was transferred to a local hospital, where he was treated and released early Wednesday morning.

O’Dell was transported to the Clay County Jail. He’s been formally charged in Clay County Court with Class 4 felony reckless discharge of a firearm, and misdemeanor domestic battery. His bail has been set at $10,000 and he was ordered to have no contact with either victim.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Technicians, Clay County Ambulance Service, and Ingraham/Clay City First Responders.
