VANDALIA — Divers with the Fayette County EMA Dive Team located a 28-year-old Arizona woman dead in her car in flood waters in Vandalia early Thursday morning. 

According to Vandalia police, they took a missing persons report Wednesday on Amanda Bitter of Kaibeto, Arizona.

The report states Bitter did not return to her hotel room after going out on April 3. She was last seen at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday, going northbound on Kennedy Boulevard at Gallatin Street  

At 1:30 a.m., Vandalia officers located skid marks in the grass in the 500 block of North Kennedy Boulevard, with the skid marks pointing toward a ravine with deep flood waters. 

A Vandalia Police Office, who is a member of the Fayette County EMA Dive Team and also two other member of the dive team searched the water for a vehicle and, at 4:12 this morning the dive team located a 2007 Chevy Cobalt in the water. Amanda Bitter was found in the vehicle deceased.

The Vandalia Police Department says they were assisted by the Illinois State Police, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Fayette County EMA Dive Team, Fayette County Ambulance, Rural Med Ambulance, the Fayette County Coroner and McDowell’s Service.
