JEFFERSON COUNTY — A crash between a car and semi-truck on Interstate 57 Wednesday sent a 26-year-old Salem woman to the hospital with major injuries.

According to the Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 5:14 p.m. Wednesday on northbound I-57 near the Route 15 interchange in Mt. Vernon.

Preliminary details show the car driven by Laci Burgess was crossing multiple lanes at once while attempting to enter a median crossover.

The semi, driven by 36-year-old Serhiy Babiy of Chicago, was unable to avoid striking Burgess’ car, hitting the left rear corner of the car and sending it into the median. The semi came to rest on the right shoulder.

Burgess was transported via ambulance to a local hospital and subsequently flown to a regional hospital via medical helicopter. Babiy was not injured.

The left lane was closed for about 30 minutes while emergency medical crews tended to Burgess.

Burgess was cited for improper lane usage.
