WHITE COUNTY — Two Mississippi men were killed Saturday morning when their semi-truck ran off of Interstate 64 and plunged into the Little Wabash River in rural White County.

According to White County Coroner Chris Marsh, the semi, hauling auto parts, was traveling westbound at the 124-mile marker when it crashed through a guard rail and plunged into the flooded Little Wabash River.

The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. Two local rescue divers entered the murky waters and recovered the body of the co-driver late Saturday morning. Marsh said it appeared he had likely been in the sleeper cab of the truck when it crashed.

Marsh said it appeared the driver was able to get out of the truck but was unable to reach safety.

Divers recovered his body late Saturday afternoon not far from the wreckage. The victims have been identified as 48-year-old Michael Goffinet, of Gulfport, Mississippi and 36-year-old Adam Boggs, of Petal, Mississippi. Autopsies are scheduled for both victims Monday.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Illinois State Police, the White County Sheriff’s Department and the White County Coroner’s office. Rescue personnel from the Little Wabash Fire Department in Grayville assisted in the recovery.
