2 in truck being chased by police killed in fiery crash

BROOKLYN, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say two people are dead after a truck they were in crashed as it was being chased by police in southwestern Illinois.

Illinois State Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. tells the (Belleville) News-Democrat that the crash stemmed from a call Brooklyn police received about a man with a gun outside a nightclub. Dye says a person at the scene pointed to a black truck leaving the area, telling the officer that the driver had a gun.

When the officer drove after the truck, the man driving with a woman in the passenger seat sped off. A short time later in the nearby community of Venice, the truck crashed, flipped over and burst into flames.

On Wednesday afternoon, police said the two people had not yet been identified.
