WAMAC — A 65-year-old Salem man is in the Marion County Jail on a felony charge of battery stemming from a weekend altercation involving the owner of Blue Goose Liquor in Wamac.

According to Wamac police, they arrested Ernie Whipple Saturday for aggravated battery, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

When officers arrived at the store, Whipple was allegedly cursing at the owner who was lying on the floor. The owner said Whipple had punched him in the chest.

Whipple reportedly resisted being handcuffed so officers forced him to the to the ground. The trespassing charge allegedly comes from Whipple being banned earlier from entering the store.
