CLINTON COUNTY — A Carlyle grandmother and great-grandmother picketed in Carlyle last Friday in pursuit of justice for a grandbaby shaken so badly it now suffers from permanent disabilities.

Jennie Warren and her 81-year-old mother Virginia Colvard will continue to picket, said Warren, until an arrest is made and someone held accountable for what happened to her granddaughter Shyann Ricks.

Shyann was 5-months old when in the early morning hours of January 6, Carlyle emergency personnel responded to her home on a report of an infant not breathing.

Shyann was ultimately airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, where doctors reported her injuries were the result of child abuse. An investigation into her injuries was launched at that point, but as of this date no one has been arrested or charged with causing Shyann’s injuries that resulted in her being blind, unable to hold up her head, and having to be fed through a tube in her stomach.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office says extensive interviews have been conducted with Shyann’s parents and others present at the time. Polygraph exams were scheduled and offered to the parents, but according to Warren they were not taken.

Warren says Shyann and her toddler sister were taken from their parents following the incident and placed in her care. However, the Clinton County Court decided in April to return the children to their parents despite the ongoing investigation into what happened to Shyann. Warren worries about what might happen next to the children.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, their agency has worked closely with the Carlyle Police Department and the Department of Children and Family Services to solve this case. Crimestoppers is now offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for Shyann’s injuries.
