Tyron D. “Tony” Shook

SALEM — Tyron D. “Tony” Shook, of Salem passed away July 5, 2020, at his home, with family at his side.

Born September 20, 1939, in Centralia, he was the son of Ralph E. and Lucille (Newman) Shook.

Tony graduated from Centralia High School, earned an Associates Degree from Kaskaskia College and completed a banking program at LSU. Following graduation from Kaskaskia in 1961, he began working for the Bank of Patoka. For nearly 40 years, he worked in local banking including at Salem National Bank, Community State Bank in Salem, serving as President of Iuka State Bank, then retiring in 2000 as President of First National Bank of Sandoval.

He was a faithful member of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in Salem, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and on the parish council. He was active in many organizations including the Tri-County Bankers’ Association, Salem Elks Club serving three terms as Exalted Ruler, and as a member of the Salem Police Pension Board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In retirement, he developed the Skillet Fork Wildlife Management Area at his farm in northeast Marion County, where he loved to spend time with close friends. He was recognized locally for his support of soil and wildlife habitat conservation practices.

He married Carolyn L. Schwartz on November 25, 1961, in Centralia and she preceded him in death on August 12, 2004. He married Marilyn Shetley July 8, 2006, in Salem and she survives.

Also surviving are his children, Barry Shook and wife Paula of Hanna City, IL, Jennifer Stoner and husband Ken of Greenville, SC, stepchildren Brent Shetley and wife Susan, Joseph Shetley and wife Cheryl and Robyn Clark and husband Lloyd all of Salem. Tony also has two grandchildren, Parker and Macie Stoner of Greenville, SC, step-grandchildren, Melisa (Jeromy) Ainsley, Melinda (Michael) Becker, Jenifer (Nick) Slabaugh, Drew (Izumi Arriaga) Shetley, Alyssa (Ryan) Pruemer, Taylor Parker, Caleb Shetley, Colyn Shetley, Raygen Parker and four great-grandchildren Alex, Ethan, Rachel and Tristan.

Also surviving are brothers Ralph (Patty) Shook of Centralia, Charles (Pam) Shook of Centralia, and brother-in-law Dan Reyes of Antioch, CA.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Candace Reyes.

Tony is also survived by many other extended family members, nieces, nephews and cousins from the Shook, Shetley and Schwartz families.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the St. Theresa Gymnasium with Father Abraham Adejob officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Centralia.

Visiting hours will be from 9:30 am until the service hour at St. Theresa Gymnasium. We caution those attending to remain aware of social distancing due to current health concerns.
