MOUNT VERNON — A 44-year-old Mt. Vernon man is in the Jefferson County Jail following his arrest Wednesday by Mt. Vernon police in connection with the shooting of two people in the 2800 block of College.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, they received a 911 call around 4:20 p.m. reporting shots fired and a person laying on the ground.

Mt. Vernon police officers and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, along with medical personnel from the Mt Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance responded to the area.

Upon officer’s arrival, it was determined two people had been struck by gunfire and transported from the scene by personal vehicles.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Mt Vernon Police Department Detectives and a Mt Vernon Police Department Crime Scene Technician responded to assist the patrol units with the investigation.

During the investigation, officers took Alvin C Smallwood into custody.

Detectives began working with Jefferson County States Attorney Sean Featherstun and obtained a search warrant for the Smallwood residence.

During a search of the residence, a firearm and additional evidence was located.

Smallwood was taken to the Jefferson County Jail on two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Armed Violence, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon with bail to be set.
