He was born on November 13, 1936, in Centralia, Illinois, the son of Charles E., Sr. and Sara Mabel (Boren) Chambers. He married Carolyn June Copple on September 16, 1955, at Little Grove Christian Church in Walnut Hill, Illinois and she survives him in Centralia, Illinois.
In addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Charlie is survived by his children, Debbie Fischer and husband Mike of St. Charles, Missouri and son Brad Chambers and wife Val of Peoria, Illinois; granddaughters, Sarah Barroway and husband Andy of Scottsdale, Arizona, Hannah Bonham and husband Steve of Houston, Texas and Mary Roberts and husband Brandon of Normal, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Ben Barrowayand Silas Roberts and former daughter-in-law, Cindy Chambers of Morton, Illinois. Charlie was expecting the birth of his great-granddaughter in January 2021. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. Chambers, Sr. and Sara Mabel Chambers; sisters, Gladys Aussieker, Mae Hart, Thelma Laswell, LilAshenfelter and Margie Fuller; father-in-law, Lowell Copple and mother-in-law, Wilma (Shaw) Copple.
Charlie was a devoted member of the Calumet Street Christian Church, formerly the Hickory Street Christian Church, where he was a deacon, elder, treasurer, Sunday School teacher and a member of the church board. He loved the Lord and he loved watching all sports, especially the Saint Louis Cardinals. He is remembered as being a great husband, dad, and grandpa, and he was a good friend to many.
Charlie retired as a UAM employee from Rockwell International after providing service to this company from 1983 until 1997. Earlier in life, he was employed in the sales department at Radiac Abrasives in Salem, Illinois from 1975 until 1983, sales department at the Lear Siegler Stove Foundry in Centralia, Illinois for fifteen years and after graduation he was employed in the office of the Family Protection Life Insurance Company in Centralia, Illinois. He graduated with Centralia Township High School’s “Class of 1953” and graduated eighth grade from the Frog Ridge Grade School. He lived most of his life in Centralia, Illinois.
Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Charles E. Chambers, Jr. will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Calumet Street Christian Church in Centralia, Illinois with Mr. John Willis officiating. Private inurnment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park near Sandoval, Illinois.
As a result of current national health circumstances, friends are invited to join with the Chambers’ family via Live Stream on the Calumet Street Christian Church’s Facebook page, or at 12 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020, on the church’s YouTube page.
Friends may pay their respects to the Chambers’ family, sign the guest book, or make a memorial contribution from 9 a.m. until the time of Mr. Chambers’ services at 12 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Calumet Street Christian Church in Centralia, Illinois. The family asks those who are attending to please be mindful of social distancing, wear a mask, and take any health precautions necessary to ensure a healthy environment.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Chambers’ honor to the Calumet Street Christian Church in Centralia, Illinois, and will be received by the Moran Queen-Boggs Funeral Home at 134 South Elm Street in Centralia, Illinois.
