JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Jefferson County jury on Monday found a 30-year-old Mt. Vernon man not guilty of sexual assault but did return a verdict of guilty on a charge of unlawful restraint.

Theodore Jefferson was facing charges of Class 1 felony sexual assault by force and Class 4 felony unlawful restraint and Class 4 criminal damage to state-supported property.
Jurors on Monday heard forensic DNA evidence in the case before being handed the case for deliberation. The case is scheduled for sentencing on November 5.
Jefferson was free on bail in the sexual assault case when he was arrested in June on charges accusing him of a stabbing in the 1000 block of South 26th in Mt. Vernon.
He’s still facing those charges which include Class X felony armed violence, Class 2 felonies for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and aggravated domestic battery, along with Class 3 aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Jefferson remains in the county jail. A date for the trial in the stabbing case has not yet been set.
