Mt. Vernon man killed in Monday night crash on I-57

JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Mt. Vernon man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on I-57 in Jefferson County Monday night.

According to Illinois State Police, around 7:40 p.m., a 2007 maroon Dodge driven by 39-year-old Charles Whipps and a 2020 black Ford driven by 25-year-old Samantha Marshall of Elkhart, IN were going north on I-57 at milepost 96 when Whipps’ vehicle struck the rear of Marshall’s vehicle.

Marshall’s vehicle ran off the roadway and into a ditch. Whipps’ vehicle continued traveling northbound on I-57 on the right shoulder, overturned and stopped in the median. He was killed. No word if Marshall’s passenger, 51-year-old Christine Bradburn of Elkhart, IN, was injured.
