MARION COUNTY — Authorities are investigating a fiery car crash in rural Odin that resulted in the death of the person believed to have been driving the vehicle.

Odin firefighters were responding to a report of smoke when they found the vehicle on fire on a closed section of Farthing Road just south of Community Beach Road.

Upon their arrival, firefighters found most of the car and its tires had been destroyed but then they spotted a badly burned body in the driver’s seat.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Marion County Coroner, and Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to investigate.

Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle likely ran off the closed section of the road where it apparently caught fire.

The identity of the person found in the vehicle has not yet been released.

Barriers that had been put in place to keep vehicles from entering the closed section of the road had apparently been removed.
