Former Vice President Joe Biden has defeated President Donald Trump in Illinois and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin has won reelection, continuing a pattern of Democratic dominance in the state.

Presidential candidates in recent years have ignored Illinois because it has voted overwhelmingly for Democrats.

The Republican president made some early campaign stops in southern Illinois, a part of the state where he is most popular.

Durbin won over four lesser-known challengers. The Senate’s second-highest-ranking Democrat had raised millions of dollars and was widely expected to win. The 75-year-old was first elected in 1996 and has been Democratic whip since 2005.

However, downstate and locally, Republicans swept most races.

Republican Mary Miller won election to U.S. House in Illinois’ 15th Congressional District to replace retiring Rep. John Shimkus.

GOP incumbent Congressman Mike Bost won relection to U.S. House District 12, and Republican Rep. Rodney Davis was re-elected to a fifth term, fending off a challenge from Democrat Betsy Dirksen Londrigan in central and southwest Illinois.

In Marion County Republican Tiffany Schicker defeated Democratic opponent Cathy Malone to win the Circuit Clerk seat being vacated by the retiring Ronda Yates.

GOP incumbent Troy Cannon defeated Democratic opponent Nicholas Heath to retain the County Coroner seat.

In Clinton County, Republican Doug Gruenke defeated Democratic opponent Janice Pulver-Lewis for State’s Attorney, bringing in more than 72 percent of the vote and leaving the City of Centralia to hire a new attorney.

The only Democratic candidates to win election in Clinton County were not facing Republican opposition.

Phillip Moss was retained as Clinton County Coroner and Dennis Middendorf was elected as a county board member for District 2.

And voters in Centralia rejected a proposal that would levy a half-cent sales tax that would have provided funds for police and fire departments purchase equipment.
