JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 47-year-old Mt. Vernon man was charged Wednesday in Jefferson County Court with multiple felonies stemming from an incident last week where he allegedly battered a woman with a baseball bat.

According to the Mt. Vernon Police Department, Dontae D. Harris was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery, armed violence and home invasion.

Officers responded just before midnight November 12, to a residence in the 1500 block of Jones for a report of a female who had been battered with a baseball bat.

Officers located the female at the residence and transferred her care to paramedics on scene. The female was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to a St Louis Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers initiated an investigation into the incident. Members of the Mt Vernon Police Department Detective Division took over the case and continued the investigation.

Detectives arrested Harris in connection with the incident and transported him to the Jefferson County Jail.

Harris is currently on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections for a Jefferson County conviction for domestic battery.

He was formally charged Wednesday in Jefferson County Court with two Class X felonies for home invasion, and two Class 2 felonies for armed violence. He’s next due in court December 9 on those charges.
