FOREST PARK, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a suburban Chicago police officer and a man who jumped out of his car during a traffic stop and opened fire both suffered gunshot wounds.

A spokesman for the Oak Park Police Department says one of that city’s officers was assisting an officer in neighboring Forest Park with a traffic stop on a busy street near the Eisenhower Expressway on Thursday morning when the driver emerged from his car and started shooting. The officer returned fire and both suffered what are described as serious but not life-threatening injuries.
