MARION COUNTY — Bail was set at $150,000 for a 58-year-old Salem man charged in connection with a high-speed pursuit through Jefferson and Marion counties Sunday night.

Earl Morlan was additionally found in contempt of court Tuesday after cursing during a Zoom court hearing and calling Assistant State’s Attorney Melissa Doran a vulgar name during the hearing.

Despite being admonished by Judge Allan Lolie following his initial profane outburst, the defendant continued to curse and the court muted his audio feed.

He was then found in direct contempt of court after he left the table at the jail before Judge Lolie could finish admonishing him of his behavior.

Tuesday’s hearing had been continued from Monday when Morlan was reportedly causing a disturbance at the Marion County Jail.

He’s charged in Marion County Court with multiple felonies for possessing a stolen vehicle, theft of motor fuel, and aggravated fleeing and eluding police, along with a half-dozen traffic violations.

Morlan has since been charged in Jefferson County Court with four traffic violations stemming from citations from the Ina Police Department in connection with Sunday night’s pursuit.

He’s next scheduled to appear in Marion County Court June 10 for a preliminary hearing and a first appearance with his court-appointed attorney.
