JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 39-year-old Ashley man was arrested Thursday night for leaving the scene of an accident after his car was struck by a train.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, around 10:33 p.m. Thursday, they responded to a vehicle vs train crash on Old Centralia Lane near East Campbell Road.

A tan 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis had reportedly pulled onto tracks facing west and was struck on the rear end by a Norfolk Southern train.

Upon arrival, deputies learned the occupant had fled on foot northbound just prior to the collision.

A search of the area was conducted by available first responders, and approximately 5 1/2 hours later, the driver, identified as 39-year old David A. Higgins, of Ashley, was found to have walked to the Red Carpet Inn.

Higgins was located in the area and taken into custody without incident for leaving the scene of a vehicle damage accident.

Christian’s Towing collected the vehicle wreckage and the railroad company inspected the scene to ensure the rail system was safe to continue operations.

Higgins was transported to the Jefferson County Jail, where he posted bond on the misdemeanor charge.
