FAYETTE COUNTY — A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on U.S. Route 40 between Brownstown and St. Elmo on claimed the lives of five people.

According to the Illinois State Police,  the accident occurred at 3:14 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 40 at N 1750 Street.

Crash reports say a vehicle driven by 50-year-old Lloyd A. Rowe, of Brownstown, was traveling westbound when, for unknown reasons, State Police say the vehicle ran onto the right shoulder.

Rowe reportedly overcorrected, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle and skid into the path of a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Hailey E. Funneman, of Effingham, that was traveling eastbound.

State Police say the collision caused both vehicles to skid into the south ditch where they came to rest.

Both drivers, along with th]ree passengers in Funneman’s vehicle: 25-year-old Coleton Price, of Shumway, 43-year-old James W. Bowlin, of Effingham, and 45-year-old Jeana M. Kollman, of Effingham, were all pronounced dead at the scene.  The State Police adds no further information is available.
