CENTRALIA — Harold “Ed” Womble, 94, of Centralia, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia.
He was born October 8, 1926, in Centralia, Ill. to Joseph and Thelma (Atchison) Womble. He married Betty Ann Greear on September 6, 1948.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Shepherd and husband Chuck of Kingwood, TX., Susan McCarthy of Rockford, Ill.; one son Mark AKA Corey Stevens and wife Linda of Los Angeles. Six grandchildren, Kevin Shepherd and wife Natalie of Rockwall, TX,. Kellee Spangle and husband Steve of McKinney, TX., Kari Holman and husband Kevin of Allen, TX.; Adam McCarthy of Rockford, Ill., Brent McCarthy of Loves Park, Ill. and Cori Lynn Stevens of Los Angeles, five great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Ainsley Spangle, Sydney Shepherd, Josie McCarthy, Lexi Holman; and four great-grandsons; Alex Tsiganos, Braylon McCarthy, Logan Holman; and Blake Shepherd.
He lived all his life in Centralia and was a retired Centralia High School teacher. He began his teaching career in 1953 at Patoka before coming to Centralia where he taught for 28 years. He had a Bachelor’s degree in vocational education. He has a Master’s degree and a specialist Certificate in Job Placement from Southern Illinois University. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force during World War II. He also was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, The First Presbyterian Church of Centralia and the Centralia Moose and Elks Lodge. He was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and stepfather.
Funeral services for Harold “Ed” Womble will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2021, at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Rev. Dwain DePew officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and the Centralia V.F.W. Post 2055.
Friends may call 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 25, 2021, at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia.
