MOUNT VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Police Department is looking for a 29-year-old Woodlawn man in connection with a weekend shooting death at a local bar.

According to Police Chief Trent Page, officers responded early Sunday morning to the Corner Tavern at 19th and Perkins to a call reporting shots fired and a person down.

First aid was rendered to a male gunshot victim at the scene; however, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. The victim’s name is not being released at this time.

Following a brief investigation, detectives secured an arrest warrant for Jaquez Gardner charging him with First Degree Murder and Being an Armed Habitual Criminal.

Gardner was released to parole in November of 2019 after serving less than 7 years of a 16-year sentence handed down in Jefferson County Court on a Class X felony conviction for aggravated discharge of a firearm.
